About

Why this exists

Be Gentle started with a simple question: what if kindness wasn't something you felt, but something you practiced?

Most of us want to be kind. We believe we are, more or less. But life moves fast, and kindness, the deliberate kind, tends to get lost somewhere between the morning rush and the evening exhaustion.

We wanted to build something that didn't ask you to add another thing to your plate. No meditation sessions that make you feel guilty for skipping. No streaks that punish you for being human. No gamification that turns presence into performance.

The philosophy

Be Gentle is built around a few core beliefs:

  • Kindness is a skill. Like any skill, it gets stronger with practice. Not with motivation, not with good intentions, but with repetition.
  • Small acts matter. The world doesn't change in grand gestures. It changes in held doors, softened tones, and the decision to listen when you could scroll.
  • Attention is generosity. When you truly notice something, the wind in the leaves, a stranger's expression, the weight of your own hands, you give that moment value.
  • Rest is part of the practice. The Japanese concept of Ma, the meaningful pause, is not laziness. It's the silence that gives the music its shape.

What you'll find in the app

90 daily challenges. One per day, building slowly from almost invisible acts to ones that take genuine courage. Not a checklist, a practice.

The Witness practice. A daily prompt to stop, observe something in the world around you, and capture it with an analog-style camera. The observation comes first. The photo is proof you were there.

Ma moments. Breathing exercises, nature prompts, quotes chosen to slow the mind. No badges.

Weekly letters. Every seven days, a private retrospective. Not analytics, a gentle accounting of what you did, what you skipped, and what you noticed.

What you won't find

  • No accounts. No cloud. Your data lives on your device and nowhere else.
  • No analytics. We don't track how you use the app. We don't want to know.
  • No social features. Your practice is private. Your reflections are yours.
  • No streaks. Miss a day? That's fine. The app will be there when you come back.

The name

“Be Gentle” is a reminder, not a command. Be gentle with others. Be gentle with yourself. Be gentle with the world and how you move through it.

That's the whole thing, really.
